The Sound of Buenos Aires
Centro Artístico Solidario Argentino (C.A.S.A.) and Todos Hacemos Música (THM) are two music programs that advocate for music inclusivity for diverse populations in Argentina. C.A.S.A professionally and financially supports children from local neighborhoods who want to pursue music and art careers; THM organizes concerts and releases studio albums for musicians with special needs. Although these two programs are slightly different from each other, they both represent the progressive music inclusion programs in Latin America. Medill Reports went to Buenos Aires this February and listened to their stories through their genuine music and voices, to understand the power of music that has full potential in interconnecting with different people.
Behind the scene:
This is among the first documentaries that I ever made, so there were lots of challenges during the whole process. In the beginning, we hadn't planned on covering two organizations. When the plan changed, so did our shooting schedule and original narrative. We also faced obstacles in Buenos Aires's torrid climate, which made it so that our equipment needed to cool down every hour. When conducting interviews and later adding subtitles, the language barrier also complicated the process. My teammate and I do not speak any Spanish, so we had to depend on our local fixer and Google Translate. However, even though this was a quite challenging project, I enjoyed the time spent and am proud of this final product.
